Henry Evans was born in Superior, Wisconsin in 1918. He came to San Francisco and opened the Porpoise Bookshop in 1944. Evans subsequently acquired an 1852 Washington hand press on which he printed books and pamphlets. In 1958 he began printing linoleum block botanical prints on the same press, for which he gained worldwide renown. Evans passed away in 1990.
